SOL-MED I
(2001 – 2003) SOL-MED I was launched in 2001 and its main objective was to broaden the information basis for solar thermal technologies in South-Western Mediterranean countries following the successful model of Greece and Cyprus. The two countries selected were Spain and Portugal, both characterised by ample solar potential and large market possibilities but until now, with limited penetration of solar energy technologies and very small contribution of the solar energy in the Energy Balance. The project aimed at revealing and alleviating the market barriers and providing market incentives in order to facilitate the development of a market for high efficiency solar thermal systems throughout the Southern Mediterranean countries. The base for the organization of the project’s promotional measures were the transfer of marketing and technological experience, the exchange of knowledge and the presentation of successful examples in Greece and Cyprus supported by the recent technological developments at EU level. The project addressed a series of issues and published a number of Technology and Market Assessment reports. Market Development Plans were elaborated and a comprehensive Awareness and Publicity Campaign Model was formulated. The website was designed as an informational forum and as an exchange mechanism to • facilitate the flow of information between the market, technology producers, decision makers as well as all actors involved in the research, development and production of solar water heating for buildings from Greece and Cyprus to Spain, Portugal.
SOL-MED I was undertaken by an international consortium led by EXERGIA S.A. in collaboration with the APPLIED ENERGY CENTRE (Cyprus), GSIA - the Greek Solar Industry Association (Greece), ICAEN (Spain) and ADENE (Portugal). It was successfully completed on May 2003. The project was co-financed by the Directorate – General for Energy and Transport (DG TREN) of the European Commission, in the framework of the ENERGIE Programme.
